These layer boxes are created by first choosing various hardwoods, glueing them together as a block, and then cutting out a box shape. A bottom piece is later glued to the frame, and a complementary piece of wood is chosen for the lid, which is then attached with brass hinges. The top can be augmented with intarsia, inlay or a coin. Smaller boxes are also available with sliding lids.
